FAQ


WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?

The Whitaker Vol. Fire Co. is located at 239 Church St. Whitaker, Pa. 15120 and the phone# at the station is 412-461-9164.


WHEN DO YOU HAVE PRACTICE?

Drills are held every Thursday night starting a 7 P.M. and the monthly meeting is held on the last Tuesday of the month at 8 P.M.


HOW DO I JOIN?

Applications can be obtained by asking any member of the Fire Co. You must live within a 5 mile radius of the station. After filling out the application a $20 dollar joining fee is required plus the cost of a background check which is usually $10 dollars. Once the application is read at the next monthly meeting there is a 30 day waiting period and the application is turned over to the investigating committee. After the 30 day waiting period the application is then voted on at the monthly meeting. A favorable vote puts the candidate on as a probationary member. Dues of the fire company are $2.00 per year payable in person at a regular monthly meeting.


WHAT DOES PROBATIONARY MEMBER MEAN?

The probation period is for one year. During that time a member is issued gear and begins the training process. If a member joins from another company and has certifications of training, copies of the certificates must be given to the chief to be placed in their personnel file. Probationary members are issued a pager but they do not have voting privileges or do not get a key to the building until their probation is complete. At the end of the probation year the applicants attendance and activities are reviewed and the member is voted on for permanent membership.


WHAT IS THE RELIEF ASSOCIATION?

The Fire Company has a relief association which all members are eligible to join after completing their one year probation and becoming a permanent member. More information about the relief association is available upon request.


WHAT ABOUT UNIFORMS?

Each member is issued a badge for their uniform. The uniform of the Co. consists of a white uniform shirt and black pants the can be obtained from the uniform shop located on 8th Ave. in Munhall. Patches can be obtained through the Chief or President. For more information on uniforms, talk to the President when you join.


WHAT IF I HAVE SPECIAL PROBLEMS?

Persons with physical or other disabilities may still join the Fire Company. There are many jobs that need to be done at the Fire Hall. Helping with fund raisers, cleaning and caring for equipment and many other duties. If you are interested contact any officer for more information.


HOW DO I BECOME A JUNIOR FIREFIGHTER?

To become a Junior Fire Fighter you must be between the ages of 14 and 18 years of age, have work papers from your school and follow the laws of the State of Pennsylvania and have permission from you parents.


WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO PURCHASE?

All fire fighting gear and equipment is provided by the Fire Company.
This includes Bunker gear, (coat, pants, suspenders, gloves, boots, helmet and safety vest) a pager with charger, and badge. A dress uniform including pants, shirt and hat are your responsibility as mentioned above.
